THE COPPER INHERITANCE.
A History of the kindred of McDowall of Scotland.
In 1295 Dougal McDowall obtained a charter for his ancestral lands from his kinsman, King John I (Balliol). The text of the charter was engraved in old Saxon characters on a plate of copper which was kept safely in the family kirk until the end of the 17th century.
The Copper Inheritance discusses the origin of the McDowall family - the great dynasty of medieval kings of Galloway from whom they are descended - Dougal McDowall, ‘the chief among the Gallovidians’ and his part in the war against the rebel Robert Bruce. The rise to power of the Douglas - the prioress of Eccles - high treason - Mary Queen of Scots and the Reformation - Oliver Cromwell - Lord Bankton and his four wives - six generations of McDowall in Edinburgh - the first workers’ strike - the master of the Queen’s works who rebuilt Edinburgh castle - ‘bloody Clavers’ (John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee), the ‘killing times’ and the covenanting rebels.
The Copper Inheritance is a new type of historical documentary - based on the meticulous research of early chronicles, medieval and later historical records, it provides a very personal insight into the life, the politics, religion, wars and the drama that is Scotland’s history from 11th - 17th century.
